Home Remedies for Painful Teeth

Your teeth play an important role in your everyday life, so when pain strikes – it can really put a damper on enjoying family get-togethers, eating a slice of birthday cake, or attending a business luncheon. The discomfort of tooth pain can also affect other body parts and make life miserable. To treat the symptoms before a trip to the dentist, you might want to consider home remedies for painful teeth.

Home Remedies for Painful Teeth

Causes and Symptoms

One of the most common causes of painful teeth is tooth decay, which can lead to a cracked tooth or an unbearable toothache. A dental infection of the tooth can cause sharp pain when you bite down on something. Other causes of painful teeth include:

• Loose Filling – When fillings become loose, you can experience sharp pain when you try to eat.

• Sinus Problems – If you feel pain in the upper teeth and experience an achy jaw ache, chances are you are dealing with a sinus issue. This pain is not characterized as being sharp or severe, but it can be uncomfortable. A sinus headache or sinus infection can cause the pain to travel to the upper jaw because it is within close proximity to the sinus cavity.

• An Abscess – Severe pain, pressure and swelling in your mouth that does not go away is an indicator of an abscess, which can fill with pus and blood along the gum line. The infection can be in the tooth, gum or bone, which causes pain when you bite down or eat.

• Damaged Pulp Tissue – Nerves are found inside the pulp layer of your tooth, and when you have a dental infection – severe pain can develop. When the pulp is damaged or infected, lingering pain can travel to your head, neck and ear.

• Dental Conditions – Physical issues in the mouth can cause tooth pain, such as problems with your temporomandibular joint[1] (also known as the TMJ).

• Tooth Sensitivity – Following a dental treatment or other issue, the teeth can become sensitive to heat or cold. Disrupting nerves within the pulp layer are to blame – the pain comes on suddenly and then goes away over time. An exposed root can also cause tooth sensitivity and pain.

• Extreme Tooth Damage – A lingering pain in one or more teeth after you consume something that is hot or cold means that the tooth is likely damaged by deep decay or a fracture to the tooth.

Painful Teeth Home Remedies

Whether you’ve cracked a tooth or recently had dental work done, you will experience pain in the mouth region at some point in your lifetime. The discomfort can slow you down and make it impossible to complete everyday tasks. Luckily, there is a wealth of home remedies for painful teeth that can get you up and running back to normal. A handful of suggestions include:

Cloves:
Using cloves for pain relief has been a remedy standing the test of time. Place a clove against painful teeth until the discomfort starts to subside. If you have clove oil in your cabinet, one to two drops can address the issue. It is the active ingredient called eugenol in the oil that acts as a natural pain reliever [2], but keep in mind that too much clove oil is toxic. You can also reach into the kitchen cupboard for your container of ground cloves, which you can turn into a thick paste by adding water or olive oil. Apply the remedy to your affected teeth and surrounding gums.

Tea:
The tannins found in tea leaves can help numb nagging tooth pain. Simply make a fresh cup of tea and stick the warmed used tea bag into your mouth. Hold the bag over your painful teeth to enjoy instant relief.

Frozen Washcloth:
When a baby is teething and experiencing painful teeth, let him or her chew on a frozen, damp washcloth.

Your Finger:
Applying pressure in the form of a gentle massage to the teeth and gums of a baby will provide relief from the pain of teething.

Ice:
Holding an ice pack covered in a washcloth over your cheek can help ease the discomfort of a painful tooth. The coldness of the ice will help numb the pain.

Hot Compress:
Some people react better to a hot compress held to the cheek region where you are experiencing tooth pain. Make sure that the compress is not too hot – you don’t want to burn your skin.

Cayenne Pepper:
Add a small amount of water to cayenne pepper, which will create a paste that when applied to sore gums – can help stop tooth pain.

Salt Water:
If your painful teeth are connected to an accumulation of bacteria, try swishing a small amount of heated salt water inside of your mouth. Hold in the water for as long as you can, and then spit out. Repeat a couple of times to see an improvement in pain levels. Add one healing spoonful of salt to a glass of warm to hot water to begin.

Hydrogen Peroxide:
With a bubbling action that heals, swish a bit of hydrogen peroxide close to a painful tooth. Some people cannot stand the taste of this remedy and will have to dilute the liquid with a small amount of water. Make sure to spit out the hydrogen peroxide after using in the mouth.

Extracts:
Flavorful extracts are not only helpful for enhancing the taste of food, but their alcohol content can help treat painful teeth. One of the best options is the pleasantly tasting vanilla extract, but you can also choose almond, peppermint or lemon. Simply saturate a cotton ball with the extract, and then hold in place over a painful tooth. You can also apply a cotton swab dipped in extract to painful gums and teeth.

Apple Cider Vinegar:
After soaking a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, hold the remedy in place over a painful tooth to enjoy relief. Some people will also use regular household vinegar to achieve the same results.

Garlic:
Smash a clove of garlic before applying to a painful tooth – right between the cheek and tooth. You can also add a small amount of salt to the mashed garlic for enhanced results.

Potato:
Take the skin off of a raw potato before cutting a fresh piece and holding in place over a painful tooth.

Cucumber:
Hold a slice of fresh cucumber over a painful tooth to take advantage of its cooling properties. It is best to use a cucumber that has been stored in the refrigerator. Another variation of this remedy is to mash a piece of cucumber with a small amount of salt before applying to sore areas.

Ginger:
Chew on a fresh piece of ginger to receive instant pain relief for a problem tooth.

Black Pepper:
Apply ground black pepper to a painful tooth or rub in a mixture of pepper and salt to see a change in pain.

Liquor:
The alcohol content in liquors, such as scotch, brandy, whiskey and vodka, zeroes in on pain to provide relief. Swish a small amount inside your mouth to see results.

Mouthwash:
A strong mouthwash (like Listerine)[3] not only kills pain-causing bacteria, but the alcohol also treats painful teeth. Swish the mouthwash and then promptly spit out.

Baking Soda:
Moisten a Q-tip with a small amount of water and then dip it in baking soda – making sure to coat the swab well with baking soda. Rub the Q-tip into the affected teeth and gums to gain pain relief. Some people have also made a mouth rinse by mixing one heaping spoonful of baking soda into a small glass of lukewarm to warm water. After the baking soda dissolves, swish the remedy inside of your mouth.

Peppermint:
You’re in luck if you grow peppermint in your garden because the fresh leaves can help alleviate tooth pain. Just hold in place over the affected area to calm the discomfort.

Lime:
A slice or wedge of lime can help treat a tooth that is bothersome. A lime that has been chilled will work best to treat tooth pain. Biting into the lime helps release some of the juice that will help put an end to the pain.

Onion:
It may smell unpleasant, but a slice of fresh onion held inside of your mouth and gum region of painful teeth can provide relief. You must use a freshly cut onion because it is the juice that will deliver pain relief.

Prenatal Yoga Poses

The world over people are realising the benefits of yoga and pranayama in our daily lives. Yoga is touted not just as a physical exercise, but actually a way of exercising each entity of human existence. It is physical, mental, spiritual, intellectual, as well as emotional well being that Yoga hopes to achieve through exercise, concentration as well as breathe control. Most of the times, strenuous exercises like the Surya Namaskar are forbidden for pregnant women as the body of a pregnant woman is rather weak and thus prone to easy injury, which might also affect the child within her.

Prenatal Yoga Poses

This, however, is not to mean that yoga itself is injurious to the health of a pregnant woman. In fact, some postures in yoga are extremely beneficial for a pregnant woman. We all know about the fact that few women are able to give birth naturally these days owing either to complications or lifestyle issues. Some easy and less strenuous yoga postures will actually help the woman have a natural childbirth, free of complications or Caesarean section operations and so on. Here are a few prenatal yoga poses for pregnant women.

Pregnancy Yoga Poses

Here are some yoga poses beneficial for women who are pregnant:

Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

This pose is known to strengthen the spine, open the chest and the lungs to make breathing better and easier and is also effective for stimulating the thyroid gland. For this pose, you need to begin by lying supine on your back. Then, bending by the knees, bring the soles of your feet close to your buttocks so that they are parallel to each other. Interlace your fingers and bring them under your back. Now, lift your body, from the hips to the ceiling. Stretch your interlaced fingers bringing them as close to the ankles of your feet as possible. Even as you stretch, do not forget to inhale deeply. Now push your shoulders above the ground too, one at a time. Exhale and relax the fingers, even as you bring down your upper middle and finally lower body to the ground. Let the body loose, allow your knees to knock against each other and relax completely.

Cobblers’ Pose (Badhdha Konasana)
This pose is known to open and stretch the lower abdomen, hips, and the groin, giving it a thorough exercise. For this pose, you will have to begin by sitting erect on the floor with your legs outstretched. Bending your legs at the knees, bring the soles of your feet together so that you create butterfly’s wings-like structure with your legs. Keeping your hand on the knees, press the legs down gently as much as you can, and then slowly release.

The Child Pose (Balasana)

The child pose proves to be immensely helpful in opening up your chest and pelvis. For this, you will need to go down on all fours, with your knees spread out just a little wider than your hips. Gently and gradually now, support your buttocks firmly between your heels, stretch your arms out, with the palms of the hands pointing towards the floor and rest your forehead on the ground; exhale while you are in this position. Raise your arms from the ground so that only the palms touch the ground while your whole upper body is supported by your hands, like a baby about to crawl, even as you inhale deeply. Repeat this exercise at least ten times, but do remember to know your limitations.

Some Precautions

Here are a few precautions that you need to keep in mind while practicing yoga during pregnancy:

By all means, keep away from pre-natal yoga exercises that require you to stretch your body too strenuously, especially your abdominal muscles. You must realise that injuring yourself is all the more easy when you are pregnant.

Always listen to what your body is trying to tell you. If a particular pose causes discomfort or pain, alter it or stop doing it. There is no harm in adapting the pre-natal yoga exercises to suit your body as it changes throughout your pregnancy.

It is extremely important not to compress your abdomen. If you need to bend forward while you're sitting, place a towel or strap around your feet and hold each end. Then bend from the hips and lift your chest. When you do pre-natal yoga exercises that involve twisting, you need to twist more from the shoulders and back as this will avoid putting pressure on your abdomen.

Here are a few cardio workouts that aid in weight loss

Bicycling
Perhaps the most eco friendly and least boring way to lose weight would be about 45 minutes of cycling every day – it could be on the stationary cycle or the mobile one. It comes under aerobic exercises and is extremely helpful for toning muscles of the upper thighs and calves. In addition to all that, it helps build stamina and is excellent for the heart, blood vessels, and lungs. The best part about it is that one can do it in the open as well as in the comfort of one’s home, with an easily available exer-cycle. Many exer-cycles are foldable and occupy very little space. It is, however, advisable to wear lose and comfortable clothes and durable shoes while exercising as strenuous as this. Also, it is better to do some stretching exercises before going for a non-stop cycling session.

Step aerobics are excellent for building lean muscles, which will result in increased calorie burning. Because of the motions done in step aerobics, much of the muscle gain will be in the legs, buttocks, and arms. The increased muscle activity in these areas will assist in firming them up and getting rid of extra fat stored there. It is also a way to increase the metabolic rate of the body. Assuming that your intake of food remains the same, your body will actually begin to lose weight rather than gain. All you need is comfortable shoes, a room, and music. Make sure you do stretching exercises prior to it and go from slow to fast to slow again.

Swimming
The only other exercise that could give the whole body a workout is swimming. The breaststroke alone can burn about 400 calories in half an hour. After all, swimming uses almost all of your major muscle groups. It places a vigorous demand on your heart and lungs. Swimming is also popular with people who are extremely overweight, pregnant, or suffering from some kind of injury. It is excellent for toning the thighs, calves, upper arms and the buttocks, which many people complain they can never get rid of.

Though this was primarily supposed to be a ‘male’ form of exercise, kickboxing is now finding a heavily accepting crowd with the so-called weaker sex! The only difference is that women take it to be able to lose weight. One could begin with aerobics or with any other form of stretching exercise to warm up before beginning a rigourous kickboxing regime.
