Chronic Mono Diagnosis

There are two ways through which Chronic mono diagnosis can be conducted.

But before we discuss about it, let’s have a clear idea about this viral infection.

Mono or mononucleosis is an infectious disease caused by the EBV (Epstein Barr Virus). The disease, which is also known as Pfeiffer’s disease, Kissing disease and glandular fever as well, can have a negative effect on the health of an individual.

Though, the disease mononucleosis does not usually last for more than 4 months; however, if the disease persists longer than 6 months then it is referred to as chronic mononucleosis. This condition occurs rarely but if it occurs then it must be investigated further to rule out the presence of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Infectious mono may cause complications such as loss of appetite, fatigue etc. which may disintegrate the quality of life of a person. Some of the symptoms of chronic mononucleosis or recurrent mononucleosis include fever, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion and lingering sore throat. Mono is a dormant disease and very rarely does it advance to the chronic stage.

A tissue biopsy or blood test is performed to diagnose the disease. However, laboratory results are not always foolproof of the disease. In some cases, false negative and positive results may occur because of the active response of the antibodies to the EBV tests.

The most common form of diagnosis is by testing the presence of 50% lymphocytes and 10 % atypical lymphocytes when the individual is suffering from fever, pharyngitis etc. Serological test is another method through which you can determine the presence of infectious mononucleosis.

The signs and symptoms of the disease in itself is a method of diagnosis.

Presence of splenomegaly, posterior cervical adenopathy, axillary adenopathy and inguinal adenopathy is an indication of mononucleosis. If physical examination fails to detect splenomegaly then it means the kissing disease is dormant and there is nothing to worry about.

Earlier, Heterophile antibody test was used as the most common method for diagnosing the disease. In this method, the antibody is tested by agglutination of guinea pig, sheep and horse’s red blood cells. However, recent tests that are more efficient in the diagnosis of the infection have been developed.

Immunoglobin G and Immunoglobin M tests are some of the latest testing methods developed.

Causes of Sinusitis

Causes of Sinusitis

Sinusitis can be caused by anything that interrupts the airflow in the nasal passage and drainage of the mucus from the sinuses. Swelling due to change in temperature or air pressure or use of nasal spray, swimming, diving, smoking etc. may also be responsible for causing sinusitis. But when it is caused by virus or bacteria, then you get a sinus infection.

Acute sinus infection is usually caused by viral infection in the upper respiratory tract. However, viruses does not themselves cause sinusitis, but set an atmosphere by causing inflammation and blocking the nasal passage creating a niche for the bacteria to grow. In some cases, the viral cold may cause inflammation to the sinus but it is usually resolved without medication in two weeks.

Sinus infection is most commonly caused by bacteria. Streptococcus pneumonia, Haemophilus influenza, and Moraxella catarrhalis are the bacteria which normally cause inflammation in the sinus.

Sometimes, fungal infection can also cause acute sinusitis. Though, not all types of fungus present in the atmosphere are harmful to us. Fungi, such as aspergillus, however can cause serious health problems to those who have a weak immune system.

Several other common causes of sinus infection are listed below:

1) Running nose: when you are suffering from common cold and have running nose, frequent blowing of your nose can cause sinusitis because of the pressure can lead to bacterial infection.

2) Use of drugs: snorting drugs through the nose may also cause the infection.

Sometimes the side effects of a medicine may also trigger inflammation.

3) Change in atmosphere and temperature: changes in the temperature may sometimes cause nasal congestion which may lead to inflammation of the sinus.

4) Teeth and gum infection: In some cases teeth and gum infection may also cause sinus infection.

It is very important to treat prolonged acute sinus infection, as it may result into chronic sinusitis. The symptoms of both acute and chronic are the same but their causes may not always be the same. Read on to know about the causes of chronic sinusitis.

Breast Cancer Post-Surgery Care

On your breast cancer post-surgery, you may at one point feel the triumph of living again without cancer. But this feeling of triumph is accompanied by the feeling of fear and uncertainty of the cancer striking back again. The reaction of those who have undergone breast cancer surgery to the after effects is quite different.

Some common after effects they might experience are nausea, scar, unusual sensations, stiffness, swelling, wound infection, bruising, pain cording etc. And thus to cope up with the condition it is very important to know the breast cancer post-surgery care.

Following are some of the things that should be done for the follow-up care:

1. Always keep your scheduled appointment. In the first three years of the surgery, you must see your doctor every three to six months. Depending on how long you have been cancer-free, your need for visiting the doctor will decrease.

2. You will be required to go through regular mammograms even if you have done mastectomy. However, routine x-rays and blood tests in women are not a good option to check the spread of breast cancer to other parts of the body.

3. Always be alert and look out for any unusual changes that take place in your body. Do not hesitate to discuss it with your doctor if you notice any changes. It could be an indication that the cancer is recurring.

4. Those women who are taking Tamoxifen must get their pelvis checked by their doctors during the appointment as the side effect of this medication can cause uterine cancer.

5. Take care of your emotional and physical well-being. And yes, do not compare your outcome with that of others as every diagnosis differs from one another.

Strictly follow your doctor’s instruction on how to take care of your wounds after surgery. Light stretching exercises are a must after surgery to regain the mobility of your body. Keep the incision clean and dry for about a week as there is a high risk of infection. And always self-examine your breast since a woman who already has had cancer in one breast is at a higher risk of developing another one.

Call your doctor if you notice swelling in your arm, fever, loss of appetite, change in menstrual cycle and drainage from the surgical drain increases.
