4 Out-Of-The-Kitchen Remedies for Curing Acidity

Acidity or heartburn is a result of the stomach producing an excess of gastric juices which normally aids in digestion. It reaches the food pipe and very frequently causes discomfort.

It is typically characterized by a burning sensation in the abdominal area, passing gas or uncomfortable belching as well as pain in the stomach. More severe episodes may lead to vomiting. You can bring on acidity by eating spicy or greasy food, food that is not hygienically prepared, binge drinking, eating meals after long gaps and sometimes, as a side-effect of prescription medication. Pregnant women also experience acidity as the child in the womb puts pressure on the digestive tract.

Whatever the reason, thankfully, this is not a condition you need to fret about.

It can easily be treated with some amazing remedies right out of your kitchen.

1. Baking Soda

This is just what the doctor ordered for acidity, sour or upset stomach. Add ½ teaspoon of baking soda to 4 ounces of boiled and cooled water. Drink this mixture thrice a day if you are under 60 and once a day if you are a senior. A few things to remember while using baking soda as a home remedy; first, it is not suitable for young children. Second, check with a doctor if you are on prescription medicines. If you don’t fall in either of these categories, it is perfectly safe to use in the suggested quantities.

2. Coconut Water

In South Asia, we drink coconut water to keep cool during the hot summer months. This natural wonder drink is a fantastic natural remedy for acidity. It not only works as a diuretic (helps pass urine) but also relieves the burning sensation in the stomach. It is one of the most naturally mineral rich fluids that is both cheap and easily available.

3. Fruits

If you’re hungry but are suffering from acidity, you might find it hard to eat regular food. This is where fruits come in. Fruit juices, fruit pulp are not just nutritious but also have healing properties that relieve stomach disorders. Fruits like watermelons, papaya, bananas, apple and pears are highly beneficial to health.

Avoid eating fruits with a high concentration of citric acid since it can aggravate the condition. However, the exception to this rule is the sweet and salty lemon juice that works favorably. Mix one teaspoon of lime juice with 1 teaspoon of honey and a pinch of salt in a glass of water. Drink this once a day.

4. Ginger

We use it as a spice to add flavor to dishes but how come most of us have not the full potential of this humble root. It is a known remedy for migraines, nausea, coughs, congestion, indigestion and of course, acidity. All you need to do is take a very small piece of fresh ginger root, wash and scrape the skin off completely. Wash once more and then, simply suck on it for a few minutes.

Don’t swallow. You only need the juice of the root for it to work.
