Pre- Operative Guidelines for Wisdom Teeth Surgery

According to the study, for those patients who are at the risk of developing post-surgery infections, a single dose of antibiotics before the surgery is more effective than taking antibiotics for several days post-surgery. Other than this, there are several things that could be and should be done prior to surgery to avoid any post-surgery complications.

Following are some of the guidelines that should be strictly followed:

1. On the evening prior to the surgery, avoid eating or even drinking water past midnight.

2. Brush your teeth before you finally walk in for the surgery and also do not swallow your mouthwash if you are using one.

3. Avoid drinking and smoking 24 hours prior to the surgery. Also do not smoke for about 2 weeks after the surgery.

4. Avoid driving in alone on the day of the surgery. Bring along someone who is responsible enough to take care of you post-surgery. Most importantly do not drive for the next 24 hours after anesthesia.

5. Wear lose fitting clothes, avoid wearing high heels and nail polish. Also remove your eye lenses before the surgery.

6. If you are under 18 years of age, bring along a responsible adult probably your parent.

7. Take your medicines as usual unless directed by the concerned doctor. Also prior to the surgery you may also be made to fill a form.

To reduce the feeling of nausea post-surgery, it is recommended not to eat anything 6 hours prior to the scheduled surgery.
