As Your Baby Develops

Over the next 9 months your baby will be developing and changing quite quickly. Your growing bump means your baby is also growing. These are some of the main changes your baby will go through before he or she is ready to be born.   
  
The First Three Months of Pregnancy.
  • The baby grows very quickly.
  • Baby’s blood is circulating around his body.
  • Heart and internal organs are established.
  • He can suck, swallow and wee.
  • Fingers and toes are developing rapidly.
  • The baby has a face, nose, mouth and tongue.
  • Genitals (sex) organs can be seen on ultra sound
  • Baby starts to move.
  • By the end of 12 weeks your baby's approximate length is now about 16 
  • cm (6 in) and weight 135 g (4.75 lbs)


Second Three Months of Pregnancy. 
  • You start to feel your baby move inside you.
  • Your baby’s heart can be heard by the midwife.
  • Your baby’s fingernails start to grow.
  • He is starting to develop his own pattern of sleeping and waking which you will become aware of his movements over the next few weeks.
  • He can hear and can jump if there is a sudden loud noise.
  • By the end of 24 weeks your baby’s eyes will have opened for the very first time.
  • The approximate length is 33 cm (13 in) and weight about 570 g (1.25 lbs)

 The Last Three Months of Pregnancy. 
  • His skin becomes smoother and less wrinkled and hairy.
  • From now on baby will be getting plumper.
  • Most babies at about 32 weeks would have turned head downwards, in preparation for the birth.
  • The iris of baby’s eyes is blue.
  • At 40 weeks, baby reaches full size. If it is a boy the testicles will usually have descended.
  • Baby’s head will become engaged (drop down) in the pelvis ready for delivery.
  • At 40 weeks the average length 51 cms (20 in) and average weight is 3.4 kg (7.5 lbs)
