Pipe smoking carries a lower risk if compared to the cigarette smoking, although it can cause tongue and lip cancer. Cigars are not so harmful and it can also help a cigarette smoker, who wants to quit smoking, as he can shift from cigarettes to cigar. Using a low tar brand of cigarette is also worthwhile although not a substitute for giving up the habit.

Now what is an "addiction"?

An craving desire or need for a drug is termed as addiction. Some are "socially acceptable" drugs (alcohol and nicotine) as well as the illegal amphetamines ("speed"), heroin and cocaine. Addiction indicates that the body has become physically dependent on the drug and that there will be unpleasant withdrawal symptoms if the drug is stopped.

With most of the drugs (except nicotine) the addict becomes obsessed with obtaining his supplies at any cost, to the detirement of his work and family life.

The final result of this addiction is the total breakdown of mental and physical health unless some specialist treatment is obtained. Even then, nothing is certain about the cure.

This means that its not necessary for you to go for any special treatment to stop smoking because you can get rid of this habit on your own. Here are some wise tips for you,

Try to go for a job where smoking is strictly prohibited and try to keep yourself as busy as possible. But the wisest thing is never to start smoking or never to inhale.

You can limit your habit of smoking to social occasions, or just make a rule "never smoke before after-noon tea" or "only in the evenings" or "only at parties".

In U.K., most local health authorities run anti-smoking clinics and information about these can be obtained from the Local Health Office.
